Enabling green microfinance in Peru
Rodolfo Roman, Commercial Manager, Caja Cusco, said:
“Caja Cusco has integrated GFW Pro’s satellite-based technology to enhance its financial products with the goal of protecting the Amazon and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. We launched the ‘Agroprotector’ product as part of a collaboration with Peru’s Ministry of Environment, GIZ and GFW Pro. We started with a pilot in August 2024 during which we developed a system for evaluating applications for green credit. Our analysts check the production unit on GFW Pro and conduct a deforestation assessment to determine the eligibility of the applicant. As of December 2024, there have been more than 115 smallholder beneficiaries of the Agroprotector, positively impacting 502 hectares in sustainably managed areas. 44% of these beneficiaries are women, showing how our microfinance project can promote equity, economic empowerment of women and poverty reduction in the Amazon region. Due to the success of this project, we are looking to expand this to more agencies.”
